What little narrative or characterization shows up on screen could barely fill an abridged short story. Go to Full Review Time Out Jan 26, 2006
The script, about small-timers who wished they were bigger, is soon totally undermined by Fonda's most complacent performance to date and Susan George's sub-Goldie Hawn antics. Go to Full Review Vincent Canby New York Times May 9, 2005
1.5/5
The film is so bereft of emotion and so full of physical movement that it's possible this is a point that John Hough, the director, and the screenwriters wanted to make. It's a very small point to be made by such a noisy picture. Go to Full Review Ciaran Carty Sunday Independent (Ireland) Apr 6, 2026
Seldom has so much coarseness been used to such small effect. Go to Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com Jan 23, 2024

the final chase is a high-water-mark of stunt-work, well handled by John Hough... Simultaneously sociopathic and patriotic, it’s an anti-establishment drama without the politics, and shows Fonda’s free-wheeling charisma and anti-hero styling at its best. Danny D @RT40060325 Sep 20, 2026 I've gone 52 years thinking this had to be a Roger Corman production. To look it up and see it was not is quite a shock See more Max M @Househuntermax Jul 28, 2026 I’ve been obsessed with this movie since watching it as a kid in the 70s. This and Vanishing Point are the greatest car movies ever made. There, I said it. Must watch! See more Horror fan 4 @Horrorfan4life Jun 9, 2026 The dialogue at times was terrible. Definitely could've used a rewrite. The action was great and it's just a very simple 90 minute movie. The ending is the best!!! The cars looked great. Susan George was beautiful. Nice seeing Ted White playing a trooper in the movie. Roddy Mcdowalls appearance is short but cool. Tim Treakle See more acsdoug D @acsdoug Apr 20, 2026 I was a big "car movie" fan when I was a kid back in the 70s, and I seem to remember liking this one when I saw it at a drive-in all those years ago. I guess I was easily entertained back then because all I picked up on this time was how incredibly lame the dialogue was. And despite some recognizable names in the cast the only one who gives even a halfway decent performance is the relatively unknown Adam Roarke. See more mark g @Mark_Alan_G. Jan 24, 2026 This is classic early 1970s action. Souped up cars, 1970s stalwart actors, plenty of northern California scenery. It's not a complex plot, people in a fast car trying to avoid law enforcement on the road and in the air. Once you start this film, you will be hooked. Adam Roarke was great. See more Keith B B @Okbullard Jan 15, 2026 It was pretty good but got kind of slow with the average dialogue. I wouldn't bother ever watching it again. See more Read all reviews
