BadNews R @TheMovieSearch Aug 24 Devils Hollow is a crime drama that I stumbled on through Tubi. It’s one of those titles I had on my list, but I had never heard of it or knew anything about it until I decided to sit down and give it a try. The film takes a long, dialogue-heavy path — and if you’ve followed my reviews, you already know that’s a big no-no for me when it isn’t handled right. It’s not that I dislike dialogue-heavy films (I love dramas), but I need substance. I need acting that elevates the material, not bad delivery that drags it down and tears apart the creativity of the film. This was definitely a low-budget production, and let me be clear: low budget is not a problem. Some of the greatest films ever made were done with very little. But when a director doesn’t know how to process and shape that limitation properly, it shows. And unfortunately, this film just wasn’t focused in the way it needed to be. The crime aspect was deliberately flat and uninspired, with no real connection between the actors and the script. You can tell there was a lot of bantering back and forth that seemed more like stalling than story. Instead of building tension, it created a large, empty-hole dynamic where nothing really stuck. Because of that, the suspense — the crimes, the traumas, the money — all of it felt flat. Even in moments where they were clearly reaching for weight, like the long living room sequence where they’re trying to hash out the money situation, it dragged on and felt bland instead of sharp. Verdict: A missed opportunity. Instead of a gripping crime thriller, Devils Hollow ends up as a slow, dialogue-heavy slog with weak acting and no payoff.
