Nick O'Brien is the hard-drinking leader of the Regulators, an elite unit of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Ray Merrimen is the recently paroled leader of the Outlaws, a gang of ex-military men who use their expertise and tactical skills to evade the law. O'Brien, Merrimen and their crews soon find themselves on a direct collision course as the criminals hatch an elaborate plan for a seemingly impossible heist -- the city's Federal Reserve Bank.

Critics Consensus

Den of Thieves pays energetic homage to classic heist thrillers of the past; unfortunately, it never comes close to living up to its obvious inspirations.

Butler and Schreiber deliver commanding performances. They are men who could explode at any moment, at work or at home. That nonstop ticking beneath their calm exteriors fills the film with a gripping tension.

Den of Thieves desperately wants to be Heat or The Killer when it grows up. Instead it's a daft, distant, drunken cousin to those pictures, but if you studiously avoid thinking about it, you can at least enjoy its moronic antics.

The film's sole virtue is its finale - a complicated plot twist that sparks a belated, and brief, surge of interest.

A very well-written crime thriller that keeps the action to the fore but doesn't forget how important an intense a plot is as well. Butler is amazing in a role that he was born to play.

It's one thing for the bad guys to shoot one another, but when cops place dozens of innocent people in the middle of an automatic gun battle it feels gratuitous even for a movie like this.

The lesson is simple, ladies and gents. Don't judge a book or movie by its cover. There could be a fun toy waiting in that gift you didn't care to unwrap.

Ok I loved the dialogs, specially at the beginning. The performing was solid, human beings with a lot of personal flaws, I get it. Maybe the arch of the story is giving the robbers 'too much of everything'. The robbers are basically the heroes: They are trained, armed, smart and reckless. They even attempt 'distract' the police forces with a some 'bank robbery' to perform a bigger one. Who would have imagined? Maybe for that reasons when a single detective pursuits a tiny string to capture or kill all the bad guys, something is telling me that the plot was poorly written. That happens when you write too perfect characters, no script—no matter how intelligent—can make a dent in them. So I thought the ending was perfect in the sense Big Nick didn't have a clue what was going on. Although he managed to capture or subdue all the criminals, he did not actually achieve the ultimate objective. That plot twist struck me as perfect for what could have been a weaker ending.

Top 5 Heist/Bank Robber movies. Not better than Heat, Inside Man, or the Town but it is along side those movies when you are in the mood to watch a heist movie

Den of Thieves is just a CHEAP remake of Heat (1995). The original Heat 1995 is literally ten times better than Den of Thieves 2018.
