It's a very sad and moving relationship that they have. See more john l @RT00038422 09/26/2015 While Red Skelton is a respectable and skilled actor, this movie is a shameless remake of King Vidor's 1931 Best Picture Oscar winner, The Champ. It pales badly by comparison. Bypass this movie for the original which is much more compelling in telling the story. See more 04/07/2015 I like Red in anything. Considering its time and the classic Freddie Freeloader look I still like it. ~ Rik Billock See more 03/19/2014 I was never a fan of "The Champ," Wallace Berry's version or the even worst Jon Voight version, so I was not expecting much from this unofficial remake with Red Skelton as the alcoholic/gambler father barely hanging on to a failing career. His son adores him and sticks with him through it all. Needless to say, the film is a tear jerker, tugging at soft hearts everywhere. Skelton handles the dramatic parts well enough and performs some of his well known comic routines. Jane Greer has the thankless role of Skelton's ex-wife.
