While writing a monograph on historical theories of memory, Béatrice (Anne Laure Sellier), a respected academic, becomes beguiled by the allegedly true story of the Chronovisor, an occult device said to reproduce visuals from any point in history on a TV screen. Her obsession with the mysterious machine drags her from her Upper East Side apartment through the depths of New York City's hidden libraries, to the edge of a breakthrough.

Critics Consensus

An eerie, wildly imaginative work of speculative sci-fi, Chronovisor transforms its modest structure into a darkly playful meditation on our obsession with images and recorded experiences.

Whether it proves anything is, of course, up for grabs, but it surely helps “Chronovisor” remain wonderfully unclassifiable.

"Chronovisor," an eerie, evocative work of pseudo sci-fi horror, feels less like a film constructed by people and more like one excavated from the dark recesses of a nightmare.

Yes, “Chronovisor” rewards on a massive scale for its relatively small structure, but viewers will have to work to get the most from it.

The mesmerising and quietly disturbing Chronovisor is a welcome reassurance that not only can the most serious-minded people get sucked into full-blown paranoia, but they can be the ones most at peril from the consequences.

The chronovisor may not exist, but at least movies like Chronovisor do.

Walker and Auen illuminate relevant text passages... They also gave the subtitles a slightly aged look, a nice touch exemplifying their holistic approach.

I’ve never been to a movie where I had to read half of action. I went because the critic reviews were so good but I feel hoodwinked. This was the most boring movie I’ve ever seen.

This movie is so pretentious. Watching it feels like reading a very esoteric and boring book. Leaving the theater a woman said, "That felt like torture." If you like to be entertained, edified, or made to feel DO NOT pay money to see this movie.

Chronovisor is both impressive and disappointing. This quest for a fantastical machine is portrayed in an original style and on an admirably low budget. To follow the plot, much reading of sentences from books on screen is required, which makes this a fit for cerebral viewers. Yet anyone who understands how the world works would find this machine ridiculous, unearned, and a questionable choice to satisfy the same viewer.

This movie draws you in like few others. From beginning to end, you feel as though you’re not merely watching the story you’re participating in its unfolding mystery. It’s engaging, thrilling, and refreshingly original. Even after the credits roll, the experience stays with you, leaving you asking, "What just happened here?" Give yourself time afterward to process it, because this isn’t a movie you simply leave behind, you take it with you. Go see it. This is an impressive piece of filmmaking, and I’m looking forward to seeing what this talented new filmmaking duo creates next.
