Cork B @RT87142816 1 day ago I feel like I am in high school trying to plow through a Faulker novel and having no idea what is going on. Meanwhile the teacher is saying 'this has deep significance'. No, it does not. It is dark, crazy, and depressing. I am pretty sure Cage should not be an EMT. I just hope this doesn't reflect reality, but I have the sinking feeling it does. The movie is incoherent, and never finishes its plotlines, such as they are. You can't quite tell if what is happening is real or not, and I suppose this is all by design. The film certainly sets a mood and fills it with flamboyant characters, but it is in no way a fun ride. Cage was solid as the sad sack lead, and almost didn't recognize Rhames with hair! I could see why people might either love or hate this film. See more Robert P @Superbad Oct 3, 2026 Bringing Out the Dead is a 3.5 Star Movie! Martin Scorsese turns ambulance runs, exhaustion, and human desperation into something almost dreamlike, while Nicolas Cage gives the whole thing a haunted, wired intensity. The dialogue crackles, the city feels like a character, and beneath all the darkness is a surprising pulse of compassion. A strange, soulful masterpiece about trying to save everyone when you can barely save yourself. Paced to utter perfection, with barely a moment to hold still between its technical bravado and rarely missed beats of darker than dark comedy. A near Masterpiece in the moonlight. But… there’s a second movie in here, mostly bathed in sunlight, that’s paradoxically quieter, clunkier and unfortunately the emotional crux of our central character’s entire ark (ie. pretty dang important). A few beats of genuine drama aside, these sections never unravels or engage the way it wants too. By itself, it may have worked as a small mediation on guilt and forgiveness. But saddled so tightly with the brawling city lights of New York after dark (where Scorsese unleashes some truly wild adventures with his star studded cast) the two simply do not co-exist together. Making ‘Bringing out’ a triumphant but misfiring experience. See more Frenkie T @RT32638069 Nov 5, 2025 If you think about it, all, or almost all, Scorsese films are full of violence. However, "Bringing Out the Dead" is one of the few that isn't about the mafia, or even Italians, but, surprisingly, about paramedics working in an ambulance. I was expecting a heavy drama, but Scorsese made something between a black comedy and a kitsch thriller, which is generally unusual for him. The film's atmosphere and editing feel surprisingly modern and fresh. The acting is excellent, and there's a serious social subtext. And the film offers virtually no answers about what should be done about all the darkness that people themselves create. See more Gerald H @RT00885100 Sep 14, 2025 This is not a good movie, Mister Scorsese. This film feels like Scorsese’s misfired attempt to craft one of his signature works, infused with the stylistic flourishes of rising talent Tarantino. See more Read all reviews
