As civil war rages through 1990s Sierra Leone, two men, a white South African mercenary (Leonardo DiCaprio) and a black Mende fisherman (Djimon Hounsou), become joined in a common quest to recover a rare gem that has the power to transform their lives. Each of the lead actors does good work here - although Jennifer Connolly's war correspondent must to have an unseen hairdresser traveling with he r- but in regard to the social and political content, Zwick seems to have bitten off more than he could chew.

This movie is important and showed me how it is unethical to buy diamonds when I first saw it twenty years ago. Djimon Hounsou gives the greatest performance of his life too. Director Edward Zwick’s political thriller epic Blood Diamond (2006) always surprises me with its heart and cynical perspective. Blood Diamond demonstrates the ways in which Sierra Leone in Africa is exploited for their blood diamonds. Leonardo DiCaprio’s South African accent is amazing and fun to listen to for his amusing role as a selfish diamond smuggler Danny Archer. Djimon Hounsou is heartbreaking and enthralling as an African father and fisherman named Solomon Vandy, who just wants to be reunited with his family. Hounsou is phenomenal in Blood Diamond and is arguably even better than Leonardo DiCaprio. David Harewood completely destroys everyone here as the monstrous African warlord Captain Poison. He is terrifying and very charismatic to watch.

Danny Archer's words "God left this place a long time ago" reminds me of George Michael's lyrics of 1990 "He must have let us all out to play, turned His back and all God's children crept out the back door", who later in 2011-2012 sang: "I sang 20 years and a day But nothing changed The human race found some other god And walked into the flame." No wonder Captain Poison says: "You think I'm a demon, but that's only because I have lived in Hell."

Um filme extremamente impactante do começo ao fim, dos rebeldes sequestrando e escravizando os próprios conterrâneos, até usando crianças para o exército e do outro lado tem o governo que parece muito mal preparado pra situação e nesse fundo a história se passa com atuações absurdas do DiCaprio e djimon. 9.5
