What to Know

Critics Consensus

Javier Bardem's searing performance helps to elevate Biutiful, as does Alejandro González Iñárritu's craftsmanship, but the film often lapses into contrivance and grimness.

What kept me glued was the leading man whose increasingly ravaged eyes reflect a thousand tragedies with such ease: [Javier] Bardem is truly 'biutiful'. Go to Full Review Caryn James Newsday Feb 7, 2018
Irritu's trademark interwoven plots have one thread too many here, but this shattering experience-earthbound and fraught with the afterlife-is worth every undying minute. Go to Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online Sep 8, 2017

T M @darkscreen Sep 14, 2026 Grim, yes, but I imagine that immigrant lives lived on the margins in big cities like Barcelona are grim amongst the Spanish locals who are largely oblivious. The acting was stellar and the portrayal by young son of the father was just excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed this gritty film. See more Henry D @Henry_Domke Jun 2, 2026 Grim, dirty, and chaotic. It is hard to imagine how we rated it 4 stars when we first saw it in 2022. This time it felt oppressive and unpleasant from the start, and after 30 minutes we had no desire to stay with it. See more Erik B. @RT48487882 Mar 12, 2026 I feel it’s an underrated movie with a insanely realistic plot. I do believe Javier Bardem should have won the Oscar for this movie See more David S @RT73908999 May 20, 2025 A remarkable film with English subtitles. Javier Berdem's performance is extraordinary. It is difficult subject matter, but If you have lived & loved, If you have lived through loss & regret, if you have had a hard life, you will relate. You will probably cry. In the end, what is really important is family and the children and doing the right thing. I love you Amanda. See more Francisco S @FranciscoSerrano73 Mar 18, 2025 It's not a bad movie. It's just the kind of depressing subject you might want to avoid. See more Read all reviews
