Richard Martin (Sam Neill) buys a gift, a new NDR-114 robot. The product is named Andrew (Robin Williams) by the youngest of the family's children. "Bicentennial Man" follows the life and times of Andrew, a robot purchased as a household appliance programmed to perform menial tasks. As Andrew begins to experience emotions and creative thought, the Martin family soon discovers they don't have an ordinary robot.

very strange film but not really for the idea but more because the story is so nonsensical and badly paced it feels weird to watch the whole way through, almost like you started another film at some points. If it wanted to be a good film then it should have been a trilogy so the audience could actually have time to care for the characters.

The movie is lost on many who expect a film to be entirely built upon a singular theme or genre. In today's age of advancing AI, this movie is worth a revisit. Like much of asimov's works, the question of 'what defines humanity' permeates throughout, expectedly. However the film also visits the question of 'what defines character' through a look at nature vs nurture. Notoriously long, the movie has much ground to cover while exploring these themes, often in touching ways with graces of humor throughout. As a child i was able to enjoy and understand the subject and film, and perhaps enjoy it even more as an adult today.

So a robot hired as a nanny-cleaner falls in love with the kid he is watching over but as the kid grows older his looks are still not human-like despite him developing feelings so the kid, now a woman, moves on and marries a guy. The years go by and now the robot has a human appearance thanks to the development of technology and as he goes to meet again the kid he used to nanny he finds a now grandma (the kid) with her nephew who looks just like her. So the robot starts dating the nephew who is also about to get married and this time he manages to conquer the woman and overcome her doubts on his original nature. Weird? I wonder how and to who this concept can seem cute or romantic honestly...
