Thomas V @TomVee Aug 18, 2026 Shock is a decent, slow burn supernatural horror film in the creepy possessed kid subgenre, a bit like a grade B The Omen, minus the satanic element and substituting a more standard haunting. It's not a great film by any means but it works overall. Dara Nicolodi a better than adequate scream queen who elevates the film from schlock to something a bit better. For most of the film, there's a decent story that unfolds gradually, and although it veers into camp towards the end, it's generally pretty engaging. The practical effects are a mix of cheesy and decent. The child is apparently the subject of debate as to whether he is sufficiently creepy or simply annoying. Personally I think he's both but that's not a detriment, as his irritating nature is part of what drives mom crazy. Overall, this film doesn't break new ground the way Bava's earlier works did with giallo or Gothic horror, and it doesn't have the stylistic elements he is known for, but it's not a bad capper to a great career. See more laurent b @RT95576478 Jul 29, 2019 I discovered it when I was a young boy, and it really scared me a lot. I watched it again lately and still love it. I like the atmosphere, but there is also a nice script with a real meaning. But it is a very different movie from what you could expect of Mario Bava. There's no trace of any kind of gothic setup or the use of a colorful cinematography like the common Mario Bava movies, especially when it comes to horror movies. Some people thought that the movie had been directed by his son, Lamberto Bava. It is true that Lamberto has an important place in the building of this movie. First, because he is the one who wanted his father to finalize an idea he had years ago. Also, because Mario wanted Lamberto to train as a director in this movie for the scenes that had less importance to him. But, even his son now agrees that this is truly a Mario Bava movie. Anyway, it is not entirely true to say Mario Bava always used lots of colors or gothic atmosphere in his movies, you can watch "A Bay of Blood" or "Kidnapped" (though "Kidnapped" isn't a horror movie). Also, it is obvious that Mario Bava couldn't avoid the influence of recent huge horror movies like "The Exorcist". Hence why Beyond the Door II is more realistic and more dramatic. The drama or psychological side of this movie is why he still is so much interesting and moving. Daria Nicolodi gave here the best performance ever in a movie. She is really excellent. But the horror part is also very well-done, with truly scary scenes, that a beautiful soundtrack that highlights it. Don't miss it. The only thing that I still don't understand about this movie is his english title. It is absolutely not the sequel of Beyond the Door (which is a dud). See more Jun 7, 2019 For fans of Gaillo and its influences on supernatural horror of today, there are few as visually striking, masterfully shot of the genre. There is a scene where the woman pulls the blankets off of the mound in her child's bed to reveal a middle aged man with a slit throat, she then runs out, sees her son in the hallway; and, as he runs to her, right into her arms, suddenly its the same creepy man who's in her embrace. It is shot n such a way that is so flawless, jump-scary, and iconic, that several films of the 2010's have copied the scene. Actually, this film wasn't made as a sequel to "Beyond the Door" but it was rebranded as such by it's American distributor because both films features the same possessed child actor. Director Bava's visual flourishes are the only reason to watch this film, which is actually more than enough reason to watch this. Otherwise, this story about a dead man possessing his son in order to torment his ex-wife, Daria Nicolodi, ranges from silly to ridiculous to off-putting. Overall, a mixed bag for Mario Bava's final feature as director. See more Dec 6, 2015 This was seriously one of the most rediculous and obscure films that I could find. I don't know what the deal with '70s films are, but they piss me off in this genre. The same 4 songs taunting you throughout the entire film. These films make me hate the piano. Basically, this film doesn't make much sense. It's definitely a psychological horror. The plot is weird and confusing. The production quality is ass. The movie is just creepy, rather than horrific. The movie tries too hard a lot. See more Read all reviews
