Vixo S @vixo_six Jul 18 Before Midnight continues beyond the point where most romantic stories would end, confronting what love becomes once desire and possibility turn into routine, family and accumulated history. Richard Linklater’s patient direction and the painfully natural dialogue allow affection, resentment and familiarity to exist in the same space. Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy give their most exposed performances, showing two people who know exactly how to comfort and hurt each other. The film is harsh without being cynical. It understands that lasting love is not the absence of conflict, but the difficult decision to keep searching for one another after the fantasy has disappeared. I finally saw the third film and it manages to capture the sentiment of a relationship later on in life confronting fidelity, loyalty and lasting love. Their uncanny acting always impresses me. Not in a showy way, but in the sense of so much preparation without feeling forced or scripted even though it isn't ad-libbed. They're just good. The opening shot, something like a 15-min oner, is so skillful in maintaining the natural ease. Even so, this one didn't hit me in the feels like the previous two. It’s lighter, maybe even funnier than I remember the others being, but not as emotionally heavy. Still, the craft is there from start to finish, and I'm always in for a "Before".
