Some people want what they can't have; others don't know what they want and reject the perfect relationship they're in; still others don't fit in to the stereotypical screw-everyone-once-at-arms-length mentality, or are mourning the loss of something beautiful. I think that if you cannot relate/connect to any of the characters in the film then it will not affect you, but not every film can affect you in the same profound way.
