Fueled by cheap whiskey, greed and hatred, Willie Soke (Billy Bob Thornton) teams up with his angry little sidekick, Marcus, to knock off a Chicago charity on Christmas Eve. Along for the ride is chubby and cheery Thurman Merman, a 250-pound ray of sunshine who brings out Willie's sliver of humanity. Mommy issues arise when the pair are joined by Willie's horror story of a mother, Sunny Soke, who raises the bar for the gang's ambitions, while somehow lowering the standards of criminal behavior.

Critics Consensus

Loaded up with the same scatological and misanthropic humor as its predecessor but precious little of its heart or genuine wit, Bad Santa 2 presents a foulmouthed shadow of Christmas past.

These jokes may be good for momentary release, but the joke's no longer on the holiday: It's on us.

The thrill of novelty and oddness... may be gone but Billy Bob's reaction shots remain a Christmas miracle, Tony Cox snarls with aplomb and Bates hasn't been so much fun since Adam Sandler was tied to her apron-strings in The Waterboy.

While the foul language, misanthropic attitude, and cynical performances still come into focus, even squinting might not pick up much in the way of the first film's clever plotting, genuine wit, and sneaky subversive streak running throughout.

A bevy of supporting roles provide almost no real laughs, despite the fact that they're added solely for comic relief.

There's something genuinely awesome and genuinely awful about a film in which the leading characters all are relentlessly cruel to one another yet.

Like the original, it's a highly offensive and highly entertaining black comedy. Very funny, but not for everyone.

Occasional funny one-liners isn't enough to make this a Christmas classic.
