The intro pulls you in, the dirt bike race is fun, and the budding romance between Miles and Sara adds some warmth. The new friends are completely useless and exist only to abandon Miles and get the plot moving. But once Miles and A-X-L connect, the film finds its heart. Watching the robot dog analyze things, hack into systems, and even set up a romantic moment works better than it should. For a $70 million classified military project though, the logic is rough. The company loses their most advanced asset, uses an unknowing civilian as a real world test subject instead of safely detaining it, and there is no override key anywhere. The GoPro placement was not subtle either. But the ending where A-X-L self-destructs and its code still finds a way back to Miles was a genuinely cool payoff. Alex Neustaedter and Becky G deliver grounded performances, but the true star is the animatronic marvel, A.X.L. The practical effects and CGI integration are seamless, making the bond between Miles and his robotic companion feel authentic. While critics were divided, the audience's love for this film has only grown through streaming. The ending was a massive cliffhanger that begged for an expansion of the "C-7" project lore. We need to see A.X.L. evolve and take on the shadowy corporations that created him. In an era of endless reboots, A.X.L. is an original IP with massive franchise potential. However, the screenplay undermines the film’s potential; it’s disjointed, inconsistent, and often fails to develop the story or characters in a meaningful way. While the concept and performances show promise, the movie ultimately loses cohesion and fails to resonate emotionally. I just felt the writing of the relationships and in general was lacking. It felt like this was a sequel to something. Like we already KNEW the relationships between everyone, yet we didn't know anyone. Watching this in 2025 with AI a big thing, makes this a very interesting concept. I'd be interested to see it redone as a series maybe, that way they could build up character relationships. Don't know where/how the series would end, but for an hour and a half movie....... it's definitely sub par. See more Lynn D @RT10911610 06/09/2025 For me personally, I loved the concept a lot and the merging of sports and Transformers adjacent robot science fiction made for an interesting and compelling story, and the cgi (especially on AXL) really holds up! Then again, the acting and writing could definitely be better. So, in conclusion, it’s a great concept and worth a watch, but it’s far from perfect. See more Read all reviews
