Every single frame looks so intentional, so perfectly composed, that you could pause at any moment and hang it on a wall. The way Joe Wright turns the story into a theatrical, almost dreamlike experience is just unreal. And the costumes… I can’t even. The work by Jacqueline Durran is beyond stunning — it’s not just beautiful, it tells the story. Every look reflects emotion, status, tension. It’s fashion, but elevated to something symbolic and powerful. I couldn’t stop watching in awe. It’s one of those rare films where the aesthetic hits you just as hard as the story. But in the end this very bold reimagining of what must be a great story doesn't quite work. There is too much eye-candy and not enough substance. It almost feels like a two-hour trailer for the book. The staging is so theatrical that I half expected the cast to burst into song at any moment. Because of the over-the-top melodramatic staging, nothing feels real. It is all surreal. Not Hollywood style by any means. It has the brechtian alienation effect. You're watching it all play out, but aware this is a production . Watchable in spite of this.
