Why we elected to turn this story into slapstick after the opening scene is a guy who kidnapped a person and then shot himself, no clue. That is bizarre. The booby traps in the house are outrageously amusing, a farmers house trying to kill a podcaster- I mean, this film deserves a much higher rating. Don is sometimes very funny, other times just a bore to watch. i don't think we needed so many scenes of him being upset, especially because he says very little that isn't quickly demonstrated in the first few minutes we know him. the likeable cantankerous or embarrassing aspects of his character would shine more if there was a little less emotional depth, or if the movie itself was more serious. this is serviceable and totally watchable especially given that it knows it's a B flick, but i think it lacks substance in many ways. the protagonist's trauma early on in the film isn't really reflected on very much, and he doesn't seem spent or stressed out by the events of the film, which i don't think is entirely realistic. still, he's not bad. i just have a hard time feeling attachment to his character, and the film seems to be more focused on the booby traps than anything else. i did enjoy many parts, but there are a lot of narrative imperfections that keep the film from being everything it could be. the letters and memorabilia from jean in particular are nice enough, but the words used in them weren't particularly poignant or relevant to the story. i don't think this is a film about the protagonists self development, and it's unclear what the general purpose or message the movie is. perhaps if we had a little more natural/human of an interaction with don instead of this unstable comedic relief type of guy, it would make more sense for the film to be so sentimental about him. the movie is good enough, and i might even watch it again for the set design and props, but it's definitely got some problems. if the creator is reading this: keep up the good work, but try to put a little more effort into making the sentimental aspects of the film more meaningful instead of all of this intangible/generic hallmark content, or just don't include as much of it if you don't know of something deeper for the letters to say. it may be a good idea to find some team members to help combine their ideas with yours, because you have a good concept and pretty good execution in terms of the setting and traps. i think this closing scene where the protagonist is being told that his story is so good and people like it so much felt very forced as well, and especially for him to say "it's got a bit of everything" is just too on the nose.
