Full of swiftly etched, well-developed characters and peppered with taut action sequences, pic has the kind of long-reaching dramatic span more often seen in regular dramas. Go to Full Review

Yoo Ha directs film seemingly in the usual motif of the rise and fall of a criminal anti-hero, but he enriches it with plenty of drama while he focuses on the repercussions of violence and criminal life in the psychosynthesis of the main character Go to Full Review

The film may not be a knockout, but it's still one hell of a punch. Go to Full Review

A circus of Shakespearean themes about the rise and fall of not just one man who tried to get ahead in life, but also how his successes and failures affected -- and afflicted -- all those around him. Go to Full Review

Ha Yu, the young director of the sleek Korean gangster drama A Dirty Carnival, walks the genre-movie tightrope like a master: He keeps us guessing but never gets so hot for novelty that he disrespects the ground rules of the form. Go to Full Review

See more 06/24/2021 This is a brilliant Korean gangster film. It's main edge to other gangster movies is it's realism. Great fight scenes and a brilliant lead character who you adhere to. I watched from the UK with subtitles and still really enjoyed it. See more 01/07/2018 A touching drama for a thug trying his best to make ends meet. See more 09/17/2015 Yet another gangsta pic from Korean and its both sentimental and rough in its own way See more 07/06/2015 An extremely realistic gritty Korean gangster film. While the plot might not be the most original, it is indeed very authentic. The subtle twists and turns "Dirty Carnival" takes are surprisingly fresh for a country that is famous for continually mastering the mafia genre on a regular basis. I mean a few of the best gangster films I've seen in the past couple months were "New World," "Nameless Gangster" and "Infernal Affairs." Now those are some heavy films to compete with in my mind, and "Carnival" goes toe to toe with every one of them. Nearly a four and half stars, but only for the fact that I've bee watered down these past couple months with an overload of mafia films. On repeat viewings that just might change. Just one more thing. Most people's complaints with Korean gangster films, especially this one, is why they don't use guns to solve nearly half the problems they are facing. Which leads to many of the great fight scenes throughout these films. From what I've read, its because criminals have a tough time getting guns in South Korea. Just wanted to answer that question because it always bothers me when defending these films. See more 08/01/2014 Nice Concept !! Ending very similar to Subramaniyapuram ! See more Read all reviews
