Dave S Mar 28 It’s a shame that more people aren’t paying attention to the films of French director Francois Ozon. Over the course of his almost thirty-year career, he has consistently made artful and accessible movies about the complex intricacies of interpersonal relationships. Such is the case with 2004’s 5 X 2, the story of a young married couple facing the end of their marriage. What separates 5 X 2 from other films of its kind (Kramer vs Kramer, Marriage Story, etc) is Ozon’s approach to the subject matter – the movie starts with the divorce agreement and then works itself backwards over the course of the relationship, focusing on five defining moments. The acting is great, the script is strong, and the production values are topnotch, but what really stands out are the quiet moments, like the expression on the wife’s face when her husband is unable to tell her that he loves her. If you haven’t seen an Ozon movie, give it a shot. See more Alain E @AlainE 11/11/2024 Well acted but the main problem I have is what was the point of this movie. In the opening scene a couple goes through a friendly political divorce. Next they take a hotel room and have sex at the insistence of the husband, but probably the wife should have expected this conclusion. As the movie progresses we move backwards in time. What we see is that the man became much more motivated once the divorce was finalized. The evening of their wedding he fell asleep without having sex. The wife went out on her own and possibly hooked up off screen with an American tourist. Generally however she is less adventurous than him. He is much more remote and barely shows up when his wife has an emergency c-section. The movie ends when by chance vacation at the same spot. The man is with his previous partner and the woman alone. We assume that around that time they start a relationship but it doesn’t happen on screen. So, the lesson is that if your spouse is indifferent, divorce him and he may get more enthusiastic. See more isla s 09/06/2022 This is a somewhat bittersweet film. I imagine that quite a number of people, perhaps some middle aged people, may be able to relate to whats depicted on screen - the various highs and lows of the relationship between Marion and Gilles. The performances are good and its, in general, a good film but I'm not sure I can say too much about it, other than its nice to see the relationship working its way backward as it were, with the chronology (in terms of the relationship) working backwards, so by the end of the film, we're witness to the start of it. Its a somewhat thoughtful and perhaps, in a way, nostalgic watch. I thought it was a good film, so I suppose I would recommend it yes. See more 03/28/2016 One of the worst movies I have ever watched. They were both miserable from start to finish. What is with the infidelity? I hear that is a very French thing? It was a complete turn-off in my opinion. Not true love.
