Ron B @stellaspal Oct 6, 2026 Fun and beautiful, and that goes a long way with me. I’ve seen a lot worse in the last 20 years. See more Henry D @Henry_Domke Aug 10, 2026 Astonishingly opulent visually. Milena Canonero deserved her Oscar for the costumes, but the elaborate hair, magnificent sets, and cinematography were nearly as impressive. There is a long list of fine actors in supporting roles, but the film belongs to Kirsten Dunst, who does a fine job. Only two things disappointed us. Much of the music was horrible and inappropriate, and the film was available only in HD. A movie this visually sumptuous needs 4K. See more Gargantua P @Geulah26 Aug 6, 2026 A masterpiece It baffles me that beauty can be so under-appreciated.It's not a question of "custom design".It's the sheer constant lavish display of color, harmonised forms, the actual gaiety reflected in practically every outfit. There is also much genuine emotion, both in celebration and grief.Kirsten Dunst has been a favourite actress ever since Melancholia. I must be a rare bird that watched it three times. Her performance as MA is stunning in its subtlety and coherence.Sofia Coppola is a master, her own whimsical, original creator. What a feast! It's inexplicable to me how rigidly focused on "history " many of the critics are.Even as most surely must have learned a thing or two.The music brings surprises that can hardly be criticised. Most of it is stylistically and period truthful, and when a modern orchestra magnificently bursts in,in all its brass splendour,it fits brilliantly with the grandeur of the coronation moment, also so apt in a scene of twirling comical group party dancing. See more Bee B @RT66293970 Mar 11, 2026 A much better film than I actually expected, after hearing some negative opinions on it. Of course this movie is style over substance, because in many ways this is exactly how Marie Antoinette and the French court of Versailles lived, all style and very little substance. In many ways the true star of the film is Versailles itself. And what a palatial supernova it is! So much wall to wall beauty and decadence is hard to imagine when reading the history books, but here Sophia Coppola has brought it vividly to the screen. The entire thing feels almost dreamlike, a strange gilded cage for its willing prisoners. Don't watch this film as a biopic of the famous French queen, enjoy it for what it is, a glimpse of Versailles; the most extreme expression of style over substance the world has ever seen. See more Brent G @bgillett86 Mar 9, 2026 Sofia Coppola knows more about making movies than I will ever dream to know, but why are there converse sneakers in 1770's France? If you want to make a period piece, then make a period piece, but I am not sure that's what she wanted and it just created this odd aesthetic and feel. It's not bad, it's just weird. Same thing with the modern music being used. Strange aesthetic for an otherwise good film. See more Glory K @Ms.Glory Feb 24, 2026 This is the movie that convinced me that style CAN BE a form of substance. Yes. In this case, style is substance. And I've enjoyed the style of this unique gem upon repeated viewings. See more Read all reviews
