Critics Consensus

Smart, solidly crafted, and palpably tense, 10 Cloverfield Lane makes the most of its confined setting and outstanding cast -- and suggests a new frontier for franchise filmmaking.

It's well acted, nuanced, and surprisingly effective. A definite must-see thriller.

It works best whenever Goodman swaggers into frame, a slack-jawed psycho with a cuddly side.

10 Cloverfield Lane might not be a true sequel to Cloverfield, but that doesn't make it any less magnificent, watching it a spellbinding treat I simply did not want to see come to an end.

Terrific performances and some effective staging are worthy enough to earn this a soft recommendation. Just don’t expect many more surprises than one would find in any given episode of Matlock.

Starring a powerhouse trio of Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman, and John Gallagher Jr., the spiritual sequel is a tense potboiler that could easily work as a play.

Through canny camera placement, fine-tuned framing, savvy editing, a foreboding score and a willingness to take its time, the claustrophobic thriller has great fun teasing its audience.

I hadn’t seen any of the Cloverfield films before but from what I understand they’re not really a standard series of films, more a succession of separate stories which are vaguely interconnected. 10 Cloverfield Lane is a tense, tightly scripted and extremely claustrophobic thriller about a deliberately murky disaster that forces 3 people to live together underground for an indeterminate amount of time. The best element is seeing John Goodman, one of the most beloved actors of all time, play wildly against type as a fanatical survivalist who manages a single truth for every 9 lies. What’s so great about it is how Goodman is clearly playing a decent human being buried under layers of grief and misery, and every now and then you seen that person creeping to the surface. The conclusion doesn’t quite match the quality of the bunker scenes, but the fact that the protagonists demonstrate intelligence and resourcefulness keeps us on their side. A neat little thriller with lots to offer.

John Goodman is a human red flag with a basement. Mary Elizabeth Winstead spends the movie asking the only question that matters: Is the apocalypse outside, or is the apocalypse sitting across from me at dinner? The bunker has everything: canned food, homemade paranoia, board games, and enough tension to make a family Thanksgiving look like a spa retreat. Then the movie starts peeling back the wallpaper, and every answer opens another door to hell.
