See more Alain E @AlainE 05/03/2025 I am watching this, appropriately a few miles from Gettysburg, and I am scratching my head trying to understand why it is panned by the critics. On the other hand, I just watched the Killing Fields, which I thought was terrible, but it has 90% approval on this site. Here we have a pretty good depiction of the war for Independence following a minor character and not a famous general or even George Washington. Donald Sutherland is underused but Pacino, Nastassja Kinski and the two actors who play Ned, Pacino’s son, do a good job. Very good widescreen cinematography and excellent music by John Corigliano. On Tubi without excessive ads. Yes, the movie was not as lustrous as the modern day versions, but it was a great attempt at historical reality. Ok, the viewers had to work a little overtime to follow the script, but all in all, it was a story that captures pain and embraces all the glory of what we call, Revolution. See more Riccardo B @RT34771342 01/26/2025 Certainly not the best film on the subject, lacking genuine pathos (everything feels overly melodramatic and contrived), and somewhat clumsy in its defense of idealistic values (the enthusiasm for the idea of building a new homeland or promised land). The pacing is not always clear (constantly shifting scenarios, a narrative lacking in strength). On the positive side, the British production can be seen as a somewhat pedantic attempt to reconstruct a crucial historical period with attention to historical dynamics (alliances, troop movements, and the inevitable sadism of war looming in the background). Not everything is to be discarded, though. However, Pacino's involvement seems purely a paycheck role and is certainly not one of his most memorable performances. For fans of historical adventure, though, it remains a viewing option worth considering. See more Read all reviews
