Critics Consensus

Hitchcock's first American film (and his only Best Picture winner), Rebecca is a masterpiece of haunting atmosphere, Gothic thrills, and gripping suspense.

The exercise in suspense is dominated by a blistering performance by Judith Anderson as the housekeeper Mrs Danvers. Go to Full Review Pauline Kael The New Yorker Jul 28, 2022
Magnificent romantic-gothic corn, full of Alfred Hitchcock's humor and inventiveness. Go to Full Review Katherine Howard Fort Worth Star-Telegram/DFW.com Mar 24, 2022
Don't go to Rebecca thinking you will see some sort of horror or freak movie. It is not a Frankenstein, but an intensely dramatic piece with all the suspense and emotional appeal you could cram into one movie. Go to Full Review Mark Johnson Awards Daily Jun 14, 2023

Rebecca might not be the most thrilling feature to come from Alfred Hitchcock, yet it undoubtedly is another great showcase of the filmmakers talents and skill. Go to Full Review Dilys Powell Sunday Times (UK) Aug 8, 2022

See more Mickey B. @Mickerdoo May 5, 2026 Hitchcock hits a stride a little late. Too long. If I was the Mrs, I’d have thrown hands at Danvers. Glad Favell caught one on the chin. The film does a great job of staying true to the novel, with a few tweaks to condense some of the scenes. As with most films of the time, melodramatic. When reading the book, I assumed under Hitchcock’s direction, the movie might come across as a little more creepy, esp Danver’s character. But wasn’t too bad imo. Maybe to appeal to audiences of the time. See more Tim M @tgmacman Jan 29, 2026 Easily one of Alfred Hitchcock's most poignant films, Rebecca possesses an unmistakable sense of atmosphere and pathos.
