Its black-and-white photography feels magnetic, with stunning lighting and memorable imagery. The theatrical mise-en-scène gives the film a unique identity, blending stage-like performances with cinematic ambition. Seeing the creature for the first time feels ceremonial, like witnessing the birth of an icon that would define future adaptations. The production design and makeup are surprisingly effective, despite minor technical inconsistencies. I especially appreciated the monster’s tragic humanity, particularly in the tender scene with the little girl and the flower. While I expected a more disoriented creature physically, the film still succeeds in creating an engaging, fast-paced, and atmospheric experience. Beyond its limitations, its aesthetic power and haunting atmosphere remain unforgettable. There's poor acting and distractions- Dwight Frye as Fritz; the annoying, goofy old baron; the drip Victor; the 'oh, what must I do?' fiance. The movie needed more doctor Frankenstein and the monster and less of the others. The scene w/ the little girl I found ridiculous. She's not instantly terrifed of this creature while grown adults are? No more flowers? Ok, then in ya go! For its time, I would think the monster wd be pretty frightening. Karloff did well enough. Clive and Van Sloan gave the other better performances. Fairly effective for just 70 min. 3 stars See more Read all reviews
