Critics Consensus

As shamelessly manipulative as any Nicholas Sparks production, The Last Song is done no favors by its miscast and overmatched star, Miley Cyrus.

Here's the revelation: Miley Cyrus is a really interesting movie star in the making, with an intriguing echo-of-foghorn speaking voice, and a scuffed-up tomboyish physicality (in the Kristen Stewart mode) that sets her apart from daintier girls. As Nicholas Sparks adaptations go, this one's both endearingly join-the-dots and surprisingly un-crass. Go to Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian Apr 30, 2010

The "last song"? In all conscience, that should really have been Billy Ray's Achy Breaky Heart in a brooding minor key. You'll feel the ache and hear the break. Go to Full Review Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) Aug 4, 2022

Miley Cyrus moves into a "dramatic" role - but acts like she's been created using CGI. Go to Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com Sep 13, 2020

⭐ MINHA NOTA: 6/10 See more Robert P @Superbad Sep 7, 2026 The Last Song = A 2.5 rating! See more Natasha R @MsNatasha Feb 25, 2026 Nope - that's a nope. Basic Sparks storyline - two white kids fall in love over the summer. Also, cancer (another classic Sparks storyline, see "A Walk to Remember"). See more TheMovieSearch R @TheMovieSearch Feb 20, 2026 The Last Song starring Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth is a surprisingly touching romantic drama that delivers more than many expected. The chemistry between Cyrus and Hemsworth makes their relationship feel believable and engaging, and the film does a strong job balancing the romance with the father’s emotional journey, adding genuine depth to the story. While the screenplay has moments that are predictable or underdeveloped, the direction, pacing, and performances keep the audience invested. Emotional beats land effectively, and the film’s heartfelt themes about love, family, and forgiveness resonate. Overall, it’s a charming, well-acted romance that deserves recognition for its sincerity, warmth, and the way it captures the struggles of love and familial relationships in a relatable, modern way. I cried at this movie. Greg Kinnear is a masterful actor. Its a classic movie and telling of life's hard problems and unavoidable tests. Love is the most important thing. I'm a masculine man and a self proclaimed sparker and I admit it. Just makes sure its one of the first ones that you watch. I did shed a tear or two, i wont lie. See more Read all reviews
