While on her deathbed, the rich Edwina Cutwater (Lily Tomlin) has her lawyer Roger Cobb (Steve Martin) add the odd stipulation to her will that her soul will be inherited by the young Terry Hoskins (Victoria Tennant). The plan backfires when Edwina dies. She ends up inhabiting Roger's body and controlling only its right side. Edwina and Roger are forced to work together to find a way to get her soul out of his body and into the body she originally intended.

At first the film is content to play the situation for raucous laughs, trading on the embarrassment of two sexes sharing the same body. Maybe the best, as the hapless attorney with the spirit of a lonely rich woman trapped in his body. Lily Thomlin is perfect and the premise of the whole thing is inventive and clever. I fell head over heels in love with this movie the first time I saw it over 30 years ago, and it remains one of my favorite comedies of all time. Martin and Tomlin are a comedy dream team, and it breaks my heart that they didn't make any more movies together. Martin gives a brilliant physical comedy performance that would have made Chaplin proud. He deserved an Oscar nomination! Tomlin is a national treasure and deserves to be regarded as one of the finest comic actors who ever lived. But what makes this such a rarity is the phenomenal group of supporting performers that orbit this dynamic duo. Rather than resting on the laurels of its leads, this film has rich, wonderfully funny and memorable characters surrounding them who help lift it to a whole different level of excellence. And I can't think of another movie ending that has ever left me on such a high - listening to Joe Williams' immortal version of the titular song while watching Martin and Tomlin together, you leave this movie practically floating on air.
