I enjoy a slow-burner but you do need a pay-off and that doesn’t present itself with this poor excuse for a folk horror.tale. Yet another disappointing horror film.

I don't understand why this movie doesn't have better ratings. In my eyes, this was a really interesting folk horror, with exceptional acting, and beautiful cinematography that created an eerie, growing atmosphere of dread, throughout. I really liked the "show don't tell" nature of the direction, too – just observing characters doing everyday chores and actions, set the scenes nicely without having to overly explain their situations, and gave the story a realistic grounding. Marcia Gay Harden is amazing in this, completely believable accent, really gets under your skin without clunky horror clichés, you feel her fear of being abandoned, and the selfish lengths she will go to, to retain what little control she has. The atmosphere throughout is gently threatening and grows on you, as the movie progresses. Slight spoiler: I saw people complaining about the ending, but i thought it was a good point of saying "now you have the power, what will you do with it".

The Dreadful has a lot of theme and messages that deals with how greed consumes people and how hard it is to escape a pit that ones put themeselves in.

I was amped up to see Kit Harrington and Sophie Turner. While it was good to see them, the movie itself is exactly what the title states. The plot while it seemed like it was building up, was just boring. I wouldn’t recommend this movie.
