It leans hard into stylized chaos, with characters suddenly breaking into old-school pop songs in the middle of heartbreak or a fight. At first it feels strange, but there’s something raw and strangely beautiful about it. James Gandolfini and Susan Sarandon ground the film with real emotional weight, and the supporting cast (including Mandy Moore in a smaller role) adds to the offbeat charm. It’s gritty and exaggerated, but the pain, longing, and absurdity of love all come through clearly. It’s not for everyone — the tone is all over the place, and some scenes feel unpolished — but that’s part of what makes it feel honest in its own weird way. At most, the movie plays like a dream, a person’s daydreaming and recollections as the radio plays their favorite songs. It falls mostly flat, where really no character knows where they’re headed and no story stands out. I think the characters may stay with the viewer, but their story is lost. I'm amazed that a movie as offbeat and art-house and indie as this could get A-list stars and get made. I felt it got boring at times, but I kept watching because of the cleverness, intelligence, parody, and wit. I think this will appeal a limited audience, but those who 'get it' will enjoy it.
