In this version of Christ's crucifixion, based on the New Testament, Judas expedites the downfall of Jesus (Jim Caviezel) by handing him over to the Roman Empire's handpicked officials. To the horror of his mother, Mary (Maia Morgenstern), Magdalene (Monica Bellucci), whom he saved from damnation, and his disciples, Jesus is condemned to death. He is tortured as he drags a crucifix to nearby Calvary, where he is nailed to the cross. He dies, but not before a last act of grace.

While other films about Jesus of Nazareth opted to focus on his struggles as a man of faith, Gibson focuses on the intensity of what he was forced to endure. While Gibson touches on something profoundly nihilistic, it’s ultimately a vapid experience.

While the scenes we are witnessing are graphic and difficult to watch, there’s no denying the immersive experience that Passion brought to the screen. It’s as valid and visceral as any biblical story that’s ever been captured on film.

Brutal, Beautiful, mystical… a surprisingly immersive, artistic achievement by Gibson and Company. Sad to say it’s loving and universal message can still be easily manipulated by corrupt religious entities. Still, despite any flaws in Gibson and his circle… as a historic meets religious meets paranormal meets parable of forgiveness, reconciliation, spiritual conflict, and divine guidance art piece… it is in a word… remarkable! Cast and crew knocked it out of the park in imagination and craftsmanship! I am excited to see what they do with the tradition of the resurrection and the upcoming two part sequel. As a reform Jew in an interfaith family… I also appreciate the respectful effort made in the make up and linguistic departments to emphasize Jesus’s Jewish origin and the horrible abuses against him and his fellow Jews committed by Roman final authority in ancient Israel.

Absolute crap. It's nothing like "The Last Tempation..." directed my Martin Scorsese which was haunting, and a deep insight into spiritual morality. This is an expose' of violence and if it is a symbolic treatise of human suffering, it is not that great. They go to great effort for the Jews of the time to speak Aramaic and the Romans speaking Latin, but it still comes up way short of Last Temptation. It is a testimony to Gibsons madness rather than the a look into the spiritual template that emerged from the Judaic tradition.
