Chris S @Janomi 5d Maverick is good because Mel Gibson leans into his light, comic movie-star charm. Bret Maverick is clever, slippery, arrogant, and usually one step away from being exposed, but Gibson makes him likable by playing the role with a constant wink. Jodie Foster is a lot of fun as Annabelle, bringing confidence, mischief, and sharp timing to the con-artist dynamic. James Garner adds extra charm and weight because of his connection to the original Maverick series, giving the film a nice old-meets-new quality. The playful western-comedy tone works well. The movie has gunfights, riverboats, poker games, outlaws, stagecoaches, and double-crosses, but it keeps everything breezy instead of heavy. The poker tournament gives the story a clear destination, even if the movie runs a little long. Maverick is light, charming, and easy to enjoy. It is so good to see Mel Gibson in a western setting, and that too sharing the screen with Jodie Foster and such a great supporting cast of actors. I completely enjoyed each and every bit of the film from start to finish. ​The satire, the sharp comedy, the overall playful mood, and that classic western vibe are just amazing. The twists at the very end wrap up the story perfectly. I would definitely say this is a film I will rewatch sometimes again in the future. I always enjoy the lighthearted cameos and breaking of the fourth wall. Even knowing every plot twist having watched it a dozen times, I still notice new details I didn't before.
