“I Did It My Way” exemplifies the current state of mass-oriented Hong Kong genre cinema, leaning hard on its seasoned cast to both remind viewers of better movies and carry this one around the bases fast enough that you still get your money’s worth.

While it’s always exciting to see Andy Lau play the part of a villain — which, to be honest, is enough of a draw to watch the film — I Did It My Way doesn’t offer one of Hong Kong’s greatest performers the type of quality canvas he deserves to work with.

I love old Milkyway Image movies as much as anyone, of course. But this obsession with the stars of the past, with old men way past the age when they could plausibly be working undercover in drug gangs, is doing nothing for Hong Kong cinema.

I Did It My Way feels like a big-budget soap opera. These actors are all playing the same character. The film literally has one decent action sequence while the rest of the film is devoted to to choppy CSI editing and looking contemplative on rooftops.

"I Did It My Way" passes the litmus test on being an entertaining "cop vs. gangster" thriller. Strong performances elevate it slightly past being a generic thriller. Jason Kwan's flashy, video game sensibilities prove to be both the film's best friend and worst enemy. A mix of tonal shifts mixed with clunky sound mixing essentially prevents the film from being great. For what it does well, "I Did It My Way" is passable as a good thriller and for what it does wrong, its sins are somewhat forgiven by the time the audience reaches its final, climactic showdown.
