Once a ruthless businessman and bootlegger who ruled Chicago with an iron fist, Alfonse Capone was the most infamous and feared gangster of American lore. At the age of 47, following nearly a decade of imprisonment, dementia rots Alfonse's mind and his past becomes present. Harrowing memories of his violent and brutal origins melt into his waking life. It doesn't completely work and lacks complexity, but Capone is scene-for-scene more interesting than many slicker films. Hardy's swing-for-the-fences performance is a must-see.

Dropping its leash on a star who needs one, the film mistakes decrepitude for drama, and the closest it gets to mid-scene narrative suspense is wondering whether Al Capone has just let himself go with a number one or two.

Personally speaking, I hope Trank continues to make films just as experimental and divisive as Capone. It’s refreshing to see a film that doesn’t simply exist to make a studio a hefty profit...

I would have prefered a film with more of a focus on capone's rise to the top of the Chicago underworld. But I'm all for a good revisionist film if it’s cleverly constructed. Capone mainly focuses on the mobster's final days as he lives out the last year of his life in retirement at his Palm Beach Florida estate while his mind is slowly being eaten away by neurosyphilis which he contracted at a young age. There are brief flashbacks to the ruthless gangster that he once was as he sits and reflects on his early days and hallucinates. The film is asking you to see the world through Capone's own eyes as he suffers from his ever-worsening condition. Not your typical gangster film.

Capone is a strange, bizarre, unhinged and nasty film with a strong vein of sadness and sympathy - not for its specific characters, necessarily, but as a signifier for a wider human experience. The use of flashbacks is interestingly - even refreshingly - unusual compared to the well-trodden life-recalled structure we've seen before, as is the hallucinatory conflation of past and present, which is the root of the film's disturbing atmosphere. All of these aspects are reinforced by the performances, art design and soundtrack. As for the film's flaws, which surely exist, I have difficulty pinpointing exactly where they are - like Fonse and his bag of money.

I made it as far as him shitting the bed... graphically. I get it, he's dying from syphilis. This is a gross-out movie disguised as drama.

Linda’s performance was the best bit about this film. I found Tom overacted and it just occurred as crass and not believable. Sorry - a bit gutted!
