Sledge W @SledgeWilliams Feb 16 During my teen years, I remember watching Emmanuelle of old late night on Cinemax (aka Skinemax after 11 PM, IYKYK) and what set it apart from soft-core porn that aired alongside it were compelling storylines, a focus on intimacy and intriguing erotica that made it much more than a self pleasure flick. When I randomly came across this movie (Currently on HBO Max) I got interested on how the reboot of Emmanuelle would go and after just watching it, it felt like an hour and 45 minutes of my time was blown on a tame and disappointing journey through the eyes of modernized Emmanuelle. I didn't give this the lowest review because there is sexual content, about 6 different scenes, however they're very short and lacking of erotic passion. Every intimate scene the actress did, felt as if she did it as a chore and the plot itself is fairly weak in which it leaves you wondering, what exactly is Em's purpose in Hong Kong? It offers a pretty strange view of sexual dynamics that doesn't really seem to be very egalitarian. It seems to indicate that rich and beautiful people are superior to other people. It also provides a view of five star hotels that seems like what a snob would create to describe what they think "regular" people think about luxury hospitality, as opposed to a view that more realistically depicts the fascinating world of high end luxury travel. The White Lotus has its flaws but it does a much better job of fictionalizing five star travel. As an example. But it shows in beautiful detail the world of high end hotels, which is something that precious few of us would ever access. The camera work here is gorgeous. Personally I found Merlant to be quite beautiful and she is in her prime and physically flawless, and they make sure to leverage that to great effect in repeated scenes featuring intercourse, oral, and masturbation. The other actors contribute consistently believable if understated performances, and it's all directed with a slow burn into a plot direction one doesn't really expect. But... that's where the joy stops. The problem with this film is the script. I don't know what they were thinking. It dabbles with being part soft-core porn, part social/business drama, and part erotic romance; but it doesn't do any of those justice. Even more disappointingly, it leaves EVERY arc in the air at the end of the movie with only probabilities left to the viewer so they can make up whatever ending they like I suppose. It had the potential to be more, to be a statement. Instead they abdicate all responsibility for resolution of the various stories and feck off into the sunset on a carnal note. I was not amused, nor impressed, nor taken with the poignancy of it. They could have done all three, but choose instead to impart ambiguity itself as a first class outcome. I'm sure it was done quite on purpose, but it was a poor choice. Sure, life is messy, choices are not always satisfying, and that is a fine thing to impose upon the characters in the movie, but not the audience. The writing is just lazy and this is not a complete movie in its current state. Unless you like that sort of thing, I recommend staying away from this one.
