What to Know

Critics Consensus

Damsel has an appealing action hero in Millie Bobby Brown, whose gutsy performance is often enough to balance the scales against the film's underpowered story and occasionally unconvincing effects.

Audience Says

Damsel is a decently made fantasy film and Millie Bobby Brown does well in the title role, although it's easy to tell where the story's going and the CGI isn't great.

I’ve admittedly watched Damsel twice, so it’s obvious that, flaws and all, the film put a big enough smile on my face that I had no problem sitting down for an almost immediate second look. Go to Full Review

Even on the smaller screen, though, the fresh, female-led take on the traditional tale, including a bit of a sisterhood-is-powerful twist near the end, makes it worth a watch. Go to Full Review

Too childish and shallow for adults, yet too brutal and gory for kids, this is one Damsel that really does need saving, after all. Go to Full Review

Damsel is a successful addition to the dark fantasy genre that fans of this type of film will surely enjoy for its masterful use of visual effects and fascinating inclusion of classical fairy tale tropes with an entirely new structure to it. Go to Full Review

Damsel is an entertaining dark fairy tale that gives a twist to the damsel-in-distress trope and will appeal to less demanding audiences. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Damsel’s twists on common fairytale tropes are nothing new, but the film is elevated by Millie Bobby Brown’s performance and a basic yet solid script. Go to Full Review

Donald K @Awesomestar 1d Strong movie. Millie Bobby Brown makes it a thrilling watch despite unconvincing CGI and slow start. Exciting ideas even if they are a bit predictable See more Patrick R. S @ksibaxhlkw 3d Great movie with lots of action, though a bit of a slow start...Look forward to the sequel - especially building on the Elidie and dragon as crime-fighting partners... See more Logan D 5d A resourceful young woman (Millie Bobby Brown) is tricked into a marriage by a corrupt monarchy. Reframing the "damsel in distress" as a tale of female empowerment, the film features one of the best dragons I've ever seen. Shohreh Aghdashloo's smoky voice was perfect casting for the fearsome beast. Although the film is lightweight emotionally, Brown gives a solid performance that makes you care about her character. Angela Bassett, however, is horribly miscast as Brown's step-mother. Her deliveries are almost as bad as her accent. For fantasy fans, it's a decent popcorn flick. See more Danielle W @Dannydub Dec 31 There are some valid critiques of this movie. It’s maybe a bit low budget for a fantasy film and at times can be predictable BUT the perspective is so refreshing and thoughtful that it makes up for any other minor flaws. It crushes so many sexist tropes while not feeling gratuitous or like some fake "girl power" movie made by old men. It felt true to the nature of womanhood and a good representation of feminine strength. It is not a love story in any way, nor does it necessarily make men the villains. It also does not end with a ridiculous push to forgive the people who have wronged the protagonist, even if they feel bad. They could have pushed the character into a full on female rage trope but they stopped just short, allowing for a satisfying ending without sacrificing the underlying theme of the commingling between softness and strength. The movie may not win any awards but it has done a great job of moving the industry in the right direction in the way of authentic story telling. See more Ty H @Z3Dlifestyle Dec 31 It was captivating. It keeps you on the edge of your seat; it’s anxiously anticipating & adrenaline rushing, but I feel like they botched the ending. I think the last half of the film progressively got worse & the ending was kind of horrible. It started with the end of ‘Alice in wonderland’ to ended with ‘how to train your dragon’ & it was a stupid decision. As creepy as the dragon was, it could’ve/should’ve been a lot more scary. They should’ve just kept rolling with the first half of the film, everything they were doing was perfect. They also focused too much on other characters which took time away from actually making the movie great. Could’ve been a perfectly scored film but unfortunately the ending was lame & gave me blueballs. See more Vanessa W @Vanessa219 Dec 25 At first glance, Damsel appears to offer a familiar fantasy premise: a young woman, a royal marriage, a dragon, and a perilous fate hidden beneath ceremony and silk. Yet what unfolds is not a rescue story, nor a romance, nor even a traditional hero’s journey. Instead, Damsel is a stripped-back survival narrative that uses fairy-tale iconography as a framework to interrogate power, sacrifice, and the cost of obedience. It is a film less interested in magic than in endurance—and in doing so, it both succeeds strikingly and reveals its limitations. Millie Bobby Brown stars as Elodie, a dutiful young woman from a struggling noble family who is married off to Prince Henry of Aurea under the promise of prosperity and alliance. From the outset, Elodie is presented not as naïve, but as conditioned—raised to believe that self-sacrifice is virtuous, that obedience is survival, and that her worth lies in what she can provide.
