Sam J @Sam76543 Feb 8 Awful themes underlying what could have been an interesting film. All the stereotypes of infantilised men being pandered to and looked after by the women in the film. The trite ‘comedy’ man who needs first his young bereaved daughter to run his house, manage his business, raise and care for his son. In walks in the attractive and capable female accountant who then takes over, and this weak self centred man at no time takes responsibility for anything. There is something disturbing about the role of a long suffering eye rolling 1950’s housewife/housekeeper is superimposed onto a prebubescent schoolgirl. The dialogue suggests that the writer has never spoken to a child or suffered a significant bereavement, or bothered to find out how families actually behave when this happens. The sound quality is terrible too. Initially I thought it was a clever way of emphasising the emptiness of a house, but it seems not, and more that the audio was recorded in someone’s garage. Mum Said, benefits from it's small scale ensuring an intimate portrayal of a family going through grief, turmoil and change. It shows what can be done with heart, passion, talent and a good story. The performances all round were very good. However, it is Suzanne Fulton, whose character has to find favour with a particularly trying child, who steals the show. She seems to say so much without words thanks to a lovely nuanced performance. A special mention too, for the great score - sparing, yet quirky, intelligent and emotional, without ever overpowering the story. Well worth taking the time to see, See more Read all reviews
