Rob and Samira Fisher, a young couple and new parents, relocate to Rob's childhood home on Ashfield Place, a quaint cul-de-sac in the idyllic suburb of Hinkley Hills. Their quiet life quickly unravels when a mysterious man moves into the house across the street -- a creepy Victorian that has been abandoned for over twenty years. After observing suspicious behavior and learning about local lore, Samira starts suspecting that things are not quite what they seem. Home alone on maternity leave, she finds friendship with a ragtag group of quirky neighbors who join her in investigatory misadventures that bring them closer to the dark truths about their town. As she digs deeper, Samira begins to uncover long-buried secrets and deadly threats that shatter Hinkley Hills' reputation as "The Safest Town in America." What starts as amateur sleuthing quickly escalates and, as danger creeps closer to home, Samira must decide how far she's willing to go to protect her family and her community.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

A television remake that lightens up the original film's hellish concept, The 'Burbs proves to be a good neighbor thanks primarily to Keke Palmer's crack comedic timing.

Palmer hits punchlines with ease, but her real talent is to add an absurd, transporting energy to a story’s necessities. It really pays off here. Go to Full Review

Overall, this was a really fun watch. Keke Palmer is, as always, a master of her craft, and really balanced the drama and comedy of it all with ease and expertise. Go to Full Review

The story isn’t incredibly complex, and the pacing certainly has some issues, but the cast as a whole is what makes this so endearing to watch. Go to Full Review

The 'Burbs is the right kind of modernized reboot. With all the right ingredients, the series captures the pettiness of an HOA and just how much bored curiosity gets done. Always comedic and sometimes creepy, the genre-blending series just works. Go to Full Review

Instead of a campy comedy or a dark thriller, The ’Burbs is just an aimless IP extension without the kind of strong creative vision that could make it worth watching. Go to Full Review

Coweta S @Golt73 6h Utter trash. Couldn't make it 10 minutes. Just painful to watch. Once again, Hollywood TV executives can't come up with an original idea and lazily just rehash something done far better nearly 40 years ago. Yes, it's different. Yippee. But you're not fooling anyone except the store-bought critics who fawn over anything you put on screen. See more Patrick M @McGonigle 16h I lasted 20 minutes 😭 Whoever wrote these characters should never be allowed to write ever again. See more Bryan R. @The_Brayn 22h Ridiculously bad writing. And the biggest sign of lazy writing, every white character makes typical comments towards the main character. Oh, and the bad cops came after the main character for no reason too. All in the first episode. Such a shame, the movie was so good. See more Ranman C @Ranman3554 23h The most fun I've had watching a series in years! Everyone lives on the cul-de-sac, has a quirky personality, and most have a secret. Two or three episodes in I was getting a Desperate Housewives vibe from this show, but it was because of the brilliant writing, not the backdrop. And then, the block party scenes confirmed that it was shot on the same lot! Rumors, nosiness, scheming, spying, disappearances and more. (Not a spoiler. It all comes out in the first episode.) And it's all brought to the screen by a wonderful, eclectic cast of really good actors making the most of their characters' eccentricities. I haven't laughed out loud so much in a very long time. I'm truly hoping many others see it the way I do, and that Peacock will not only renew it, but double the episode order for season 2. See more Dennis B 23h This is as Vanilla as it gets. Keke, why did you do this? Seth, do you think this is nothing more than a paycheck? Paecock/NBC makes sad/silly shows. The only reason I watched it was for Miss K Palmer See more Elizabeth C. @eacosper 1d The ‘Burbs has everything I want from a show. Great characters, twists and turns, suspense, a great soundtrack, and truly great acting! I can’t wait for Season Two! See more Read all reviews
