See more Lou T 01/31/2024 Disney/Pixar shorts have always been a delightful and welcome addition to the feature films that they accompany. Standing out against the year's worth of shorts, Lava takes the audience on an emotionally stunning adventure inspired by the Hawaiian volcanic mountains. With only 7 minutes to convey the story, writer James Ford Murphey utilizes a charming melody, creating what might be the greatest original love song in a short film. Set in the Pacific Ocean, a lonely tropical island yearns for companionship, watching the world float by as all he can do is recite his song of hope. As millions of years pass by, he continues his hopeful routine, but to no avail, until the day he goes dormant. As he sinks beneath the sea, he watches as the one thing he ached for rises above, inspired by his melody. With his fire reignited, they finally unite and can echo their chorus, keeping each other burning bright. Complete with gorgeous animation, every moment of this short is a showcase of the years of passion that slowly came together, just as the volcanoes did. Lava is a masterclass in short film storytelling as it wholly builds itself out and connects to everyone's simple desire to 'lava' someone.
